A Dream Deferred…For Now
By Dante Vitoria September 12, 2017
By now, we all know that President Trump has halted the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiated (illegally, in fact) under the Obama Administration. And as usual, it has caused a firestorm across our nation. Now, before I share my opinion, I want to share some FACTS…fair? A “Dreamer” is loosely defined as a child brought to the United States by Illegal Immigrants. Seems, fairly simple, President Trump says they have to leave the United States and “go home”. Well, for the approximately 800,000 “Dreamers” the United States IS HOME, it is the only home they know.
So, what is the reaction across the country? A letter was drafted in support of the “Dreamers” and signed by the CEO’s of:
Apple- Tim Cook
Amazon- Jeff Bezos
Berkshire Hathaway- Warren Buffett
General Motors- Mary Barra
Facebook- Mark Zuckerberg
And over 325 more. The letter implored President Trump to reconsider.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has publicly stated, “We warned you NOT to threaten our neighbors. New York City will fight to defend our “Dreamers”. We will go to the Courts and Congress to fight for thousands of New York “Dreamers”. Where you were born doesn’t matter. You are not alone.” Fifteen states and Washington, D.C. have filed a lawsuit to block the move by President Trump. They are: New York, Massachusetts, Washington, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia.
It is worth noting that all of the states have Attorney Generals who are Democrats and the states with three of the four highest population of “Dreamers”; California, Florida and Texas did not join in the lawsuit.
Harvard University has 50 “Dreamers” currently enrolled as full-time students and Tufts University has 25. Both schools are in Massachusetts. Senator Al Franken (D-MN) called the decision a “disgrace”. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) asked House Speaker Paul Ryan(R-WI) for a “comprehensive legislative solution”. The University of California system filed a lawsuit as well. UC President Janet Napolitano said, “The University has constitutionally-protected interests in the multiple educational benefits that flow from a diverse student body. If these students leave the University system before completing their education, UC will lose the benefits from their contributions, as well as the value of their time and money it invested in these students.” Interesting, money comes into play. I am surprised (not really) that UC President Napolitano did not mention all of the State and Federal aid and grant dollars these students receive and forward to the UC system. That goes for Harvard and Tufts too.
President Trump has stated in response to the critical comments by members of the House, Senate, as well as State Government officials, it too had a clear cut “dollar value”: Fund my “Boarder Wall” and I will let the “Dreamers” stay. Former Vice President Joe Biden called Trump’s decision on “Dreamers”, “Cruel. Brought by parents, had no choice in coming here. Cruel, Not American.” Everyone has a strong opinion on this, but no one has offered any type of solution…EXCEPT your Friend…Vitoria!
Ready? On a “date specific” say October 1, 2017 all “Dreamers” can pick up a “Dreamers Package”. In the package, there will be a list of documents needed and an application(s) to be filled out by the “Dreamer”. There will be a “deadline” for completion and return. If the package is complete, the “Dreamer” will receive a date to sit and take the citizenship test, the same test that ALL LEGAL IMMIGRANTS take to attain THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS HONOR in the WORLD, citizenship of the United States of America. If the package is incomplete, they will be asked for the missing information, and then they too will sit for the test.
If the applicant passes the test, simple: Welcome to your new legal home, you are now a legal Citizen of the United States of America. If you do not pass, you will be allowed to retake the test. If you fail a second time, well then you do not receive citizenship, are classified as an Illegal Immigrant. You then face deportation, unless you can qualify for a Visa of some type.
This will accomplish a few things;
1- It will identify those who are serious about becoming a citizen, and establishing a legal future here.
2- For those in the above category, they will further establish themselves as productive members of society, and TAXPAYERS!
3-And possibly, the most beneficial aspect of the “Dreamer’s” package program, once it is completed, you can use the VERY SAME package for ALL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS and either make them citizens and taxpayers or they too can be deported.
4-You will keep Postal Workers busy and not…JOKING, sorry!
So, what is in the “Dreamer’s” package? Good question, and a good answer is coming;
1-Your physical address, where do you actually live (and with who)? This is vital, as School Districts will have students who attend school, but do not live in the district and are not entitled to the benefits of the district and the TAX DOLLARS from the district.
2-What are your means of support? Do you have a job? How much income do you earn? All factors are important, you have to be a contributing member of society.
3-And are you proficient in English, our National Language.
Seems simple and fair, right? Now you see WHY no one in the House, Senate, State or Local Government has suggested anything close to this? Leave it to your favorite Wall Street Guy to help everyone out!
